Morning Song

A few hens have laid off and on through the winter, but it’s been relatively quiet.  This morning I heard something I haven’t heard for months:  The egg song (Not my chicken).  Not from one but from a couple of chickens.  I view it as a definite sign Spring is on its way.

Egg production is up from 1-3 eggs a day to 4-6 eggs a day.  Looks like it’s time to “pay” the neighbors for being so patient about the chickens, though they love the free tick and ant removal, and get ready for egg selling season.

We’re also thinking about going corn-free in addition to our normal soy-free which involves making our own summer feed.  We will keep corn scratch for winter, since it helps them generate heat to help keep themselves warm.

Working on clearing the run so they will come out of the coop. They're standing on used bedding on top of packed snow.
